Landscaping, Fencing, Deck/Patio Slab
1) Currently, except for two small places, there is a two-foot drop from the existing deck to the ground. I’m going to have The Deck Company install what might be called an “apron” – a ground-level extension of the deck (with additional steps on the sides of the deck where the drop is too large to be accommodated by a single step down to ground level).
2) The “far back” garden sits on a steep hill and, despite weed barriers and mulching (both of which look to be from the time the house was built) are rotted away. Consequently, the whole area has been taken over by weeds – including several invasive varieties and also hemlock. I’m having a professional landscaping crew come in to clear away all the weeds, invasive plants (like choke cherry, etc.). There are also a couple of trees that need to be removed because they are dying – probably due to lack of water availability. There is also an aspen tree that is near its expected end of life and it will be removed along with some smaller versions of the aspen which will, if allowed to remain, cause problems for the other trees in the garden.
3) There is a small “privacy fence” on the west side of the back yard. There’s nothing wrong with it except that it’s design is problematic – i.e., the passage from the west side of the house into the back yard is squeezed over to the outer side of the “privacy fence”. I’m going to have Marquez Fence Co. (who replaced the fence around the entire property last year) remove the existing “privacy fence” and replace it with one where the passage from the side yard to the back yard is in the middle. They will, as much as possible, duplicate the color of the existing “privacy fence” which more or less matches the patio covering and the “gazebo” – i.e., a dark cedar red.
At this time, though I have started working with the contractors involved, formal start dates have not been set. I expect that the landscaping – i.e., clearing up the back garden – will begin within the next two or three weeks and should be completed by the end of August.
The replacement of the privacy fence is probably going to be in the same time frame, with completion projected to be mid- to late-August.
The deck extension probably won’t begin until mid- to late-September due to the contractor’s existing projects. But mine isn’t a big project and should be completed by the end of September or early October.
(This information is to provide you with the background as to why I’m projecting completion to be on or before October 19.)
Finally, should members of the architecture committee wish to come over to see the back yard and further discuss these plans, please let me know and we’ll set something up at your convenience.
Thanks.
